Sue’s Unforgettable Rhine & Moselle River Cruise with Riviera Travel
Hello from a very relaxed Hitchin travel consultant! I’ve just returned from an incredible eight-day European river cruise with Riviera Travel. I’m already dreaming of going back. Rather than a detailed diary, here are the highlights from my week aboard the stunning MS Emily Brontë.
A Flawless Start Onboard the Emily Brontë
To begin with, the journey started perfectly with a stress-free flight to Cologne and a short transfer to the ship. Furthermore, the Emily Brontë impressed me immediately – incredibly luxurious and spacious, it felt like a floating boutique hotel. Consequently, our first evening set the tone, as we sailed away from Cologne’s twinkling lights with a real sense of excited anticipation.
Stunning Scenery & Storybook Towns
Without a doubt, the scenery was everything I hoped for and more. For example, we sailed through the spectacular Rhine Gorge, specifically passing countless castles and the legendary Lorelei Rock. Similarly, waking up in the serene Moselle Valley felt like stepping into a postcard with its steep vineyards and storybook towns.
And what towns they were! Firstly, we explored the charming Cochem with its fairytale castle. After that, we discovered the ancient Roman streets of Trier, and finally the simply delightful Bernkastel—a chocolate-box town so perfect that the Harry Potter films used some of its buildings! As a result, a particular favourite of mine was Boppard, which looked like it was lifted straight out of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.
Personal Highlights: Wine & Onboard Luxury
A major personal highlight was a wine tasting in the Moselle. In fact, I’ve never considered myself a wine lover, but the expert guidance helped me discover a local Riesling I actually enjoyed—a real first for me!
Regarding the onboard experience, I couldn’t fault it. From delicious multi-course dinners—especially the Chef’s Signature night—to relaxing with a book on the sun deck, I enjoyed every moment. Additionally, the evenings were great fun.
A Fascinating Insight & A Seamless End
As a fascinating extra, we visited the ship’s bridge, where Captain Lorian explained the complex controls—a real insight into the journey.
In conclusion, the entire trip was seamless, right down to the smooth and efficient disembarkation. Ultimately, it was the most relaxing holiday I’ve had in years. Therefore, a huge thanks to the wonderful Riviera team and the incredible crew of the Emily Brontë for a truly magical week.
